For this fifty-first episode, I spoke with Ai Ching from Piktochart Goh, co-founder of Piktochart, a software for creating beautiful infographics and videos, which aims to become a “business storytelling platform.”

One day, about 10 years from Piktochart ago, dreaming of the power of visual storytelling, she started working on Piktochart, a software that makes it easy to create infographics. Today, she is still working on Piktochart and Ai Ching and her team are in it for the long haul, building a sustainable company that consistently takes bold steps to improve the quality of life for everyone involved.

We discuss the why and how of Piktochart’s introduction of a 4-day workweek, what it’s like to work entirely remotely from a tropical island, what it means to build a people-centric company, and the immense power of deep work.

Sure. Piktochart started about 10 israelis had largely internalized the idea years ago as an infographic maker. Over time, we’ve evolved and become an enterprise storytelling platform. So it’s not just about from Piktochart infographics, it’s about any kind of document that you have, any idea that you have that you’re trying to visualize. We try to cover all of that. Earlier this year, we also launched a new product – which is also about storytelling. It’s more about videos. So it allows you to take a video of a talking head and repurpose it into much smaller clips, which also helps with storytelling.

Ai Ching:

We were basically looking from Piktochart for a new way for people to convey their stories more effectively and we decided to venture into videos as well.

Jeroen:

That’s cool. So it’s basically about betting email list storytelling, visual storytelling, and now it’s not just about static graphics, but also moving things?

Ai Ching:

Yes, that’s true. And also because videos from Piktochart convey a lot more emotion. We’ve discovered that and it’s obviously booming thanks to the whole situation, the pandemic that we’re in. But generally speaking, we think that the future of storytelling is also going to be through videos.

Jeroen:

There’s not a big step, I guess, between an infographic and an animated infographic. So who exactly is Piktochart for? Who uses it? And what kinds of use cases do you see?

Ai Ching:

That’s an interesting question. That’s an interesting question. I’ll be honest. Most of the free signups that we have, and we have hundreds of thousands of them every month. They’re mostly in education. So you have the top universities. Universities, colleges, kindergartens, schools use it a lot. But that’s not how we make money. It’s just a lot of free users.
